Q: "I am 50 years old and have just been made redundant. Obviously, I am very stressed and worried and wondered whether you could give me any advice on how to support my body nutritionally. I am feeling particularly ‘jaded’."
A: Our body’s reaction to stress is to release adrenaline and other so-called ‘stress’ hormones from our adrenal glands. In the long term, chronic levels of these stress hormones place a burden on our adrenal glands, which can become fatigued. This makes us more susceptible to disease, raised blood pressure, fertility problems and digestive issues. It can also lower our energy levels considerably and deplete the body of vital nutrients that allow us to cope.
A combination of B vitamins and Ginseng can help to support the body’s natural stress response and maintain optimum energy levels. It would also be useful to add Rhodiola, as this is a herb that has been traditionally used to support the adrenals when challenged and is also thought to be beneficial for fatigue and mild anxiety. There are a number of other nutrients, such as Vitamin C and Magnesium, which are crucial for countering the additional demands on the body during stress. These can be replaced with a good high-strength multivitamin and mineral complex.
