News - Selenium and CoQ10 Combo Slashes CV Risk

By Holly Taylor BSc (Hons) DipCNM MBANT NTCC

Selenium and coenzyme Q10 are both known to be essential for the health of body cells. In particular low levels of selenium and coenzyme Q10 in heart cells have been shown in patients with heart disease. However, until this year, studies on combined supplementation of these two nutrients were lacking. Now new research from Sweden has reported that long-term supplementation with a combination of selenium and co-enzyme Q10 may decrease the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by about 6%.

The Swedish researchers, led by Urban Alehagen, MD, PhD, investigated the relationship between the two supplements in a randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial with 443 Swedish citizens aged between 70 and 88. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either 200 mg per day of coenzyme Q10 capsules and 200 micrograms per day of selenium yeast tablets or dummy pills for five years. Clinical examinations, heart sonograms (echocardiograms) and blood tests for the heart disease biomarker N-terminal proBNP were measured at the beginning of the trial and every six months thereafter and any cardiovascular related deaths were recorded.

Results showed that 12.6% of people in the placebo group died of cardiovascular disease, compared with only 5.9% in the selenium plus CoQ10 group. In addition, the supplement group had significantly lower levels of N-terminal proBNP, suggesting improved heart function compared to the placebo group. What’s more, data from the heart sonography showed significantly better cardiac function in the supplementation compared to the placebo group.
